Henry Stedman (an
experienced trekker who has written several other guidebooks) includes
sketch maps with points of interest and elevations, and camp-to-camp
descriptions of the various treks. This new edition also includes
information on climbing nearby Meru.
Stedman's dead-on and often very
witty chapters on preparation, perils and pleasures of the trek, as
well as his survey of the history, nature and people of the region, are
all excellent.
He covers all the walking routes: the hut-to-hut
Marunga, ever popular Machame, Rongai from the Kenya-side of the
mountain, Shira Plateau Route with Lemosho option and the punishing
Umbwe.
